Herpes

Genital herpes caused by HSV 1 and HSV 2 (Herpes Simplex Virus), produces extensively painful vesiculoulcerative lesions on and around the genitals. Members of the same virus family can cause fever blisters or cold sores on the mouth. Oral sex can spread the virus. After healing, the sores may reappear from time to time. There is no cure for genital herpes, but medication may shorten the attacks and make them less painful.

Although it is rare, pregnant women can pass this infection to their baby during or after child birth. Herpes is not spread by toilet seats, bath tubes, swimming pools or hot tubs. It is possible to pass the virus to a partner even when you have no sores.

Signs & Symptoms

Men:

  • Ulcers & Vesicles on the penis, testicles, anus, thighs and buttocks
  • Tender lumps (Lymph Nodes)in the groin

Women:

  • Ulcers & Vesicles inside or near the vagina, anus, thighs and buttocks
  • Tender lumps in the groin

Both men and women can get sores in the mouth or in the genital area after oral sex with an infected person

Testing

  • Culture - most common method used
  • PCR – more sensitive and specific, but expensive
  • Tzanck Smear – demonstrating multinucleated giant cells

Treatment

  1. Although there is no cure for the disease antiviral drugs like Acyclovir, Famiciclovir and Valacyclovir are effective medications for herpes infection outbreaks and also prevents recurrence of attacks.
  2. Pain medications are very helpful during acute exacerbation of the disease.
  3. Counselling is also an important component in management.

The following general precautions will also help:

  • Keep the infected area clean and dry.
  • Wash all the towels before re-use.
  • Use a hair dryer around the sores instead of a towel.
  • Wear loose fitting clothes made of natural material such as cotton.
  • If urination is painful, pouring warm water over the area may help
