Statistics

Health Canada estimates that 1 in 548 people live with HIV or AIDS. Based on the population in our catchment area, this means that there are approximately 700 people with HIV or AIDS who live in the Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent communities.

As of April 2008, there were 26,630 HIV-infected persons are living in Ontario. Most affected groups by exposure category were:
Men who have sex with Men (MSM) 15,070. Persons from HIV-endemic regions 4,880 and others infected by heterosexual transmission 3,920. According to a recent report by the University of Toronto, there has been a 62% increase in HIV prevalence since 2003 among persons from HIV-endemic regions and 41% among others infected by heterosexual transmission. 25% of HIV diagnoses in 2008 were among women.

As many as 33% of people DO NOT know they are infected. In 2008, there were 1,620 newly infected people diagnosed with HIV, with increases in the  among Men who have sex with men. HIV-endemic and heterosexuals.
Overall incidence:
  • Gay and bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) - 47.3%.
  • Injection Drug Users (IDU) - 6.7%
  • Heterosexual contact - 20.5%
  • People from countries with high rates of HIV infection - 22.9%
  • Women - 25%
