Harm Reduction

Our Harm Reduction department focuses on mitigating the health risks associated with substance use to improve the overall health and quality of life of individuals and the community. Our core values include:

  • A non-judgmental approach to program delivery that treats everyone with compassion and respect, regardless of circumstance and condition;
  • Program delivery focused on enhancing the quality of life for individuals and communities alike;
  • Empowering substance users to be the primary agents in reducing the harms of their substance use;
  • Program delivery that recognizes the complex social factors that influence vulnerability to substance use and substance related harm, including poverty, social inequality, discrimination and trauma;
  • Commitment to defending universal human rights.

Needle Syringe Program (NSP)

The program provides education surrounding wound and abscess care, safer injection information and risk reduction strategies. The NSP also distributes the following supplies*:

  • Sterile unused needles
  • Safe inhalation pipes
  • Sharps containers
  • Used needle disposal
  • Ties and cookers
  • Alcohol swabs, sterile water and filters
  • Condoms and lubricant
  • Naloxone**

*The above is also subject to availability based on supply and demand.

**The following service users may access naloxone from the ACW. (1) Individuals who are at risk of opioid overdose; (2) Friends and family members of individuals at risk of opioid overdose; (3) Newly released inmates at risk of opioid overdose.

Mobile Outreach

Contactless mobile outreach direct to service users and deliveries to all distribution sites throughout Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent is available. Service users requiring NSP supplies can do so in the following ways:

Safe Sharps Disposal

In an effort to improve public health and safety, individuals seeking information regarding how to properly dispose of used sharps (syringes, needles, etc.) are encouraged to check out the “I Found A Needle. SO WHAT?” resource.

Community Disposal Bins are located at various locations in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.
